Soul Coughing Play The Songs Of Soul Coughing Again

CRITIC’S PICK
Sat., April 12
Soul Coughing, The Eastern—Frontman M. (Mike) Doughty described his Soul Coughing band as “deep slacker jazz” and for three albums in the early to mid-90s that was enough to generate a cult following. By 2000 it was over. Doughty progressed to a solo career that ditched the cool, edgy, jazz vibe of his prior outfit for a more traditional singer/songwriter approach that never really clicked although he released plenty of recorded material, and also authored two books. All of which led to 2024s unexpected reformation which resulted in the group’s first live album, released this month. Coughing’s sound always had a timeless quality, so this revival, which comes after last year’s sold-out tour, is more than just a blast from the past.— Hal Horowitz
