In honor of Women’s History Month, Soul Cinema Sundays screens the Sundance Award-winning film (1991) “Daughters of the Dust,” written, directed, and produced by Julie Dash. Julie Dash is presently the Diana King Endowed Professor in Film, Filmmaking, Television & Related Media, Art, and Visual Culture at Spelman College. “Daughters of the Dust” is the first feature film directed by an African-American woman to receive theatrical release in the U.S. Set in 1902 the film centers on three generations of Gullah Geechee women from the Peazant family as they prepare to migrate from a rural southeastern island to the mainland. All screenings include a discussion with artists and activists working along the film’s theme. Multitalented vocalist Milkah will be in conversation with Gullah Geechee descendant and Managing Director of Women’s March, Tamika Middleton.
