Marc Ribot
CRITIC'S PICK:
Fri., March 20
Mark Ribot, The Garden Club at Wild Heaven West End - Idiosyncratic guitarist Ribot is best known for his supporting work with a dizzying assortment of high-profile artists. His most historic connection was reinforcing the Latin-influenced structures of Tom Waits' Rain Dogs disc. But Ribot has released a gaggle of solo albums displaying his often offbeat, generally peculiar, even experimental, guitar techniques enlivening songs that shapeshift from pensive indie folk, to skewed jazz and complex singer/songwriter musings. The latter dominates his latest, Map of a Blue City (2025), which will likely highlight a set list few will be able to predict, although the bluesy "Death of a Narcissist" will probably appear. Ribot's technical and philosophical artistry should attract a swath of similarly inclined local musicians who appreciate his unique talents as an subversive songwriter and guitarist. - Hal Horowitz
