CRITIC’S PICK
Fri., Oct. 17

Thanks to “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” a video game released in 1998, the millennia-old wind instrument named in the title was exposed to a massively larger global audience.

Although it sounds like a flute, the ocarina technically belongs to the aerophone family, which produce sound by vibrating the air inside a rounded chamber or chambers rather than blowing air through a tube.

This Friday, AAtlanta Contemporary Music Collectivewill premiere new works for ocarina and ensemble by Georgia-based musicians including Adrienne Steely, Sydney Doemel, Julien Berger, Francisco Cardosa and Bryan Wysocki. Sounds like a mind-blowing concert program to me. – Doug DeLoach

From the venue:

No instrument is ever just a novelty, so we collaborated with Georgia-based Ocarinists to present a concert of new works for ocarina, ocarina ensembles, and mixed chamber ensembles including ocarinas by Collective composers.
