Whitespace Gallery in Inman Park is an extraordinary residence, originally a carriage house built in 1893, now a contemporary art gallery/performance space. On the grounds, three exhibition spaces (four if you count “peepspace”) allow for the work of different artists to be simultaneously displayed in different contexts while the beautiful, verdant garden environs encourage a tranquil, contemplative mood.

On Friday, Jul 11, whitespace’s (the gallery prefers lowercase) elysian atmosphere will be enhanced by Anagrams featuring JD Walsh (guitars, keyboards, electronics) and Jeff Crompton (saxophones, clarinet, keyboards). The Atlanta-based duet's music has been described as “jazz/not jazz, ambient/not ambient, acoustic/electronic.” However it’s described, trust your faithful correspondent, Anagrams’ studiously swinging, playfully adventurous sound is the perfect accompaniment to an evening at whitespace. And don’t miss Walsh’s animated work, “As Above So Below,” the feature presentation in the peepspace gallery.

The other three galleries are showcasing works by Melissa Huang (whitespace), Hanna Newman (whitespec) and Eve Brown (shedspace), all of which close on July 19th. Whether or not you’ve been to whitespace, make the Anagrams concert the reason to rectify the oversight or schedule a return visit. – Doug DeLoach

From the venue:

Join us on Friday, July 11th for a performance of ambient jazz with Anagrams! While you’re here, be sure to grab a drink from the bar and check out JD’s animation As Above So Below, now on display in peepspace.

Anagrams is JD Walsh (guitars, keyboards, electronics) and Jeff Crompton (saxophones, clarinet, keyboards) . They play jazz/not jazz, ambient/not ambient, acoustic/electronic music. With releases on Balmat (Spain) and Moon Glyph (USA), the duo was formed when avant-garde jazz saxophonist Jeff learned that his new neighbor, JD Walsh (Shy Layers, Natural Palace), was an electronic musician. Intrigued, Jeff suggested that they collaborate on a 7” record. The result was “Roll Call” / “Springs,” released in 2020. During the dark days of the Covid pandemic, Jeff and JD continued their collaboration, trading audio files and recording enough material for a full-length album. Their debut album, Blue Voices, was released by Balmat in early 2024
