CRITIC'S PICK:

Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds & the Art of Tim Youd, Schatten Gallery - The late, lamented typewriter finally gets some well-deserved attention in this free exhibition. Tracing its impact on storytelling, literature, and art over the course of two centuries, and "showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance," the display allows hands-on involvement on machines that span the entire timeline. And who is Tim Youd, you ask? He's an LA-based performance artist whose singular schtick involves retyping famous novels at venues associated with their authors, using the same model of typewriter they did; Youd calls it his '100 Novels Project.' The show at the Schatten includes a diptych he created by retyping the book 'An American Marriage' (2018) by Tayari Jones, a professor of English and creative writing at Emory University. - Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

“Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well.

Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens.

Exhibitions dates: Daily Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. Weekend hours vary; closed on holidays. For details, see visitor hours at libraries.emory.edu….
