Breakfield - Formerly Known as Boy Named Banjo ... at Smith's Olde Bar
CRITIC'S PICK:
Sat., May 9
Breakfield, Smith's Olde Bar - Some might recognize the members of Nashville quartet Breakfield as those once in the band Boy Named Banjo. Same group, new name; one they think better reflects the slight change in direction to a less bluegrass, more roots rock approach. Their new self-titled album, out next month, is produced by Jason Isbell's 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden, a sign that these guys are on a track to corral a similar audience as the one Isbell attracts. It follows Dusk (2023), a well-received debut under the foursome's new moniker. Early single "Canyon Walls" displays a country rock angle with sumptuous harmonies similar to those of Poco or early Eagles. Organic, melodic and with just enough pop to attract Americana attention. - Hal Horowitz
From the venue:
BREAKFIELD IS THE NEXT EVOLUTION OF AMERICANA BAND BOY NAMED BANJO.Formed in high school and sharpened over a decade on the road, the Nashville-Native band has built a grassroots following across the U.S. through their genre-blending sound and unforgettable live shows. With a new name, a refined sound, and a signing to Rounder Records in 2024, Breakfield returns to their roots — blending folk storytelling with a classic southern rock edge. A new single arrives late this summer, setting the stage for their debut Breakfield album.

Wheelwright makes music for late nights and early mornings, for dive bars bonfires and house parties, the highs and the lows. a Southwestern inspired blend of country folk and grunge that reflects his life growing up in the desert city of Phoenix, Arizona. None of his songs are idealistic. No light without darkness, no laughter without atleast some suffering, no thoughtfulness without some recklessness. With a Devil-May-Care spirit, and a message of hope, frustration, and love; Wheelwright’s music contrasts between worlds of wandering existentialism, the strife of modern relationships, and shreds of hope that can be found in the darkest and most broken places of ourselves.
