If you have never attended a concert of Indian classical music, put Kaushiki Chakraborty’s upcoming performance at Phase Events in Alpharetta on the calendar. One of the foremost female practitioners of patiala gharana, a vocal style characterized by rich melodic ornamentation, emotional expression and fast, complex, extremely precise taans (rapid melodic runs), Chakraborty studied under her celebrated father, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, beginning at the age of two.She is equally talented in other singing styles including khyals, thumris, dadras, bhajans and elements of Carnatic music. Accompanying Chakraborty on the Phase stage will be Ojas Adhiya (table), Kedar Naphade (harmonium) and Sohail Yusuf (sarangi). Opening for Chakraborty is another outstanding vocalist, Vibhuti Kavishwar, known as a singer of Hindustani/Light music. Vibhuti's concerts often feature Bollywood music, ghazals, bhajans, thumri-dadra and chaiti music. For this concert, she will be accompanied by Nitin Gadgil (tabla) and Shri Sai Kishor Ravishankar (flute). According to the organizer, the Kavishwar/Chakraborty concert program features English-language narration and introductions to ensure an enjoyable experience for seasoned listeners and first-time audiences alike. – Doug DeLoach

Kaushiki Chakraborty (born 24 October 1980) is an Indian classical vocalist and the daughter of Ajoy Chakraborty. Groomed at Sangeet Research Academy, she is one of the exponents of Patiala gharana. Her repertoire covers Khyals and 'semi-classical' Thumris. She is the recipient 2005 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Asia-Pacific category. She has held performances with her husband Parthasarathi Desikan.At Phase Events
