Over the last two years Ree De La Vega has watched Chaka Khan Hacienda at 8ARM grow from a Sunday afternoon Day Party for service industry folks into an arts and philanthropic institution. The party started when De La Vega assembled a crew of DJ cohorts including Florista, Vikki Powell, Jeremy Avalon, Kieren Neely, and more to spin disco and house music. Collaborations with Dashboard Arts have yielded pool parties that people will talk about for years, and working with crafty entrepreneurs such as Flora Aura Portraits, who shoot multi-hued aura photography, and Hell Yeah Gluten Free, creates a cosmic-metropolitan atmosphere. The secret to rising above typical adult day party fare lies in these playfully sophisticated collaborations. Although drum ’n’ bass may not be the average person’s choice of music, THURSDAYS AT THE MARK offer up consistency, quality DJs, a supportive venue and a loyal crowd. You can chill upstairs and absorb at a distance the sounds of DJs such as Black Sun Empire and Optical, while you sip cocktails concocted by the bashful but sure-to-get-you-tipsy bartender Gerson. Promoters J. Carter and Kenny Burns may describe their popular nightclub event SOL-FUSION as an “intercontinental love fest,” but really it’s just one hell of a good time.
