Why do eastsiders and Tex-Mex lovers of all kinds heart EL MEXICANO? The unassuming neighborhood gem south of East Atlanta Village checks all the boxes needed for success. The menu here is mainly straightforward Mexican, but there are plenty of concessions to the American palate, like fajitas. For roughly $2 apiece, the street tacos made with corn tortillas and filled with the meat of your choice — try the juicy pork carnitas speckled with bits of crispy fat — are a steal. Make a meal of them or tack a few on to your appetizer order. Further exploration of the five-page menu reveals shockingly tender short ribs simmered in a chile de arbol sauce and an array of raw seafood cocktails, including a heaping shrimp ceviche drenched in lime juice. less...

SHAUN'S RESTAURANT has been a favorite Inman Park hangout since it opened in 2007. But chef Shaun Doty's recent debut of his family-friendly Sunday night pasta dinners has lured droves of new customers and long-time regulars alike. For a mere $12, diners receive a three-course meal, which includes a family-style salad, a heaping portion of pasta from a handful of choices — the spaghetti and meatballs may be Atlanta's best — and a dessert. Affordable carafes of extremely drinkable wine selections are sold by the half-liter or liter. The rest of the menu is also available, but why bother when you can get such great food on the cheap? 1029 Edgewood Ave. 404-577-4358.[http://www.shaunsrestaurant.com| [[http://www.shaunsrestaurant.com]]. less...

The setting, inside a no-frills alcove next to the freezer section, is less than ideal. But people don't come to the cafeteria at YOUR DEKALB FARMERS MARKET for the ambiance. They come for the grub. Nowhere else in Atlanta can you fill yourself up with sweet spicy lentils, tangy rosemary-roasted mushrooms, juicy Parmesan-toasted fresh squash, a grouper fillet, baked beets in ginger syrup, and creamy baked mac-n-cheese, while paying less than $4. For $1.25 extra, you can have one of the restaurant's legendary samosas. Stuffed with beef, lamb, vegetables or lentils, they're a meal by themselves. The same plate of food, served on china in a prettier setting, would cost 20 bucks. less...

It’s seriously hard to find a decent inexpensive meal in Atlanta these days. EATS has been around about 15 years — long enough that it was there before Ponce de Leon became the kind of place that would host a Home Depot and Whole Foods. The restaurant serves excellent jerk chicken, lemon-pepper chicken and pasta dishes. What’s more, the vegetables — especially the corn and collards — are terrific. The atmosphere is … well, they remodeled the men’s room this year. It looks great!

East Atlanta lucked out last year when CANTINA LA CASITA opened, serving wonderful, cheap Mexican food in a friendly dive-bar setting. La Casita is a great place for a cheap but fun date, or to spend a summer evening getting drunk on the patio with a group of friends. We especially love the enchiladas with red sauce ($5.85), the pork tacos ($2.35) and the $4 margaritas ($2.50 on Mondays). The kid’s beans and rice is hard to beat for $1.75. The staff is a reflection of the neighborhood — tattooed, friendly, and full of personality. less...

Got a hankering for a giant bowl of brothy seafood noodles? How about some soy-lacquered duck that melts in your mouth? The FOOD COURT AT CHINATOWN SQUARE offers six outstanding fast-food spots to satiate your Asian cravings for right around $7. Yanmi Yanmi offers a quirky Chinese take on Japanese dishes, while some of the best green onion pancakes can be had at China Kitchen. All wonton soup should be like Ocean Garden’s. Hong Kong Barbecue’s display of mahogany-skinned roasted birds will make you drip and drool. Chongqing Hot Pot specializes in what its name suggests — a Chinese meat and vegetable broth fondue. You can set your watch by the noontime crowds that line up at the two locations of TAQUERIA DEL SOL six days a week. TDS sets the standard for cheap eats in this city. The food is yummy and the price is right. Everyone's got a favorite taco - we're partial to the Memphis pork and fish variations (and at two bucks apiece, you can afford to experiment to find your own fave). To mix things up, try a cheese-laden enchilada with pork green chili or beef red chili sauce, or a cup of shrimp corn chowder. A shelf full of high-end tequila in fun and funky bottles beckons if you feel the urge to splurge. "1200 Howell Mill Road, 404-352-5811, and 359 W. Buford Highway's diminutive Dominican Republic restaurant has few frills but remains generous with delicious Caribbean-style staples such as yuca, plantains and arroz y frijoles. The sancocho soup and chicken roasted with onions are reliable, but Santo Domingo's specialties are its hearty varieties of stews, from pork to fried chicken to savory goat (don't be scared), which arrive in portions so massive they essentially provide a second meal's worth of leftovers, for the price of a single plate. less...
