You've never had 'real' Chinese in America until you've had Ming's BBQ on Buford Highway. Like many Chinese restaurants, TASTY CHINA has gone through numerous chefs and staff changes — the charmingly abrasive hostess Phuong departed this year under mysterious circumstances. But, like a phoenix, the Marietta Szechuan restaurant manages to rise triumphant from every transition. Skip the "American" menu and go straight for the good stuff — anything made with Sichuan peppercorns. The french fry-like batons of dry-fried eggplant are as crispy and addictive as ever. The "Shan City chicken" — a pile of boneless or bone-in chicken fried to a crisp with toasted peppercorns and dried red chilis — will have your mouth tingling long after you depart. If the heat is too much to bare, dishes such as the "Slice fish and sour cabbage soup” — a silky and tangy broth swimming with tender pieces of white fish — are mild enough for tamer palates without sacrificing any of the wow factor. 585 Franklin Road, Marietta. 770-419-9849. less...

CAFE 101 hasn't had as much attention as some other places, but absolutely deserves its share of the spotlight. Located in the quintessential Buford Highway ruins of a defunct restaurant, this eclectically decorated Taiwanese restaurant serves stellar Szechuan specialties such as chewy Szechuan dan-dan noodles drizzled with a spicy sesame and garlicic-laden sauce, confitlike fish filets with soft tofu in a hot bean sauce packed with fresh ginger, and gigantic mountains of finely shaved ice topped with everything from beans to fresh kiwi. less...

The much-lauded chef Peter Chang has left TASTY CHINA, but the kitchen staff hasn’t missed a beat. In fact, they’ve introduced a whole new slew of dishes even while retaining the Szechwan favorites that made Tasty China Atlanta’s ultimate foodie destination for Chinese. Try any of chef Liu’s new lamb dishes, or go for any of the old favorites — hot and numbing beef rolls, wontons in chili oil, fish and coriander rolls. There are more delicious dishes on the menu here than you’ll ever have time to eat, so go soon and go often. less...

A popular, well-financed attempt to mate Chinese cookery with name-brand marketing, this is essentially Houston's or Bennigan's with orange-peel chicken. Service and cooking follow the American casual-chain model. Asian-style decorations (stone horses, reproduction landscape paintings) evoke China and the (gong!) mysterious East. The bar can be a lot of fun when there's a wait. The menu features lemon pepper shrimp, Malaysian chicken and Cantonese duck. less...
