LEGACY LINKS & FOX CREEK is a bustling golf campus that straddles the Marietta-Smyrna border. Two fast, 18-hole courses with no par 5s let golfers cram in a difficult round in a couple hours, but the main draw is the sprawling complex of practice facilities, named the best in the Southeast by Sports Illustrated. The driving range stays open till 10 every night, as do the two putting greens and seven chipping greens. There are six pro instructors on hand and an indoor practice center with tees that are videotaped from three angles for swing analysis. In August, Fox Creek replanted all its greens with Champion Bermuda grass, a new hybrid “ultra dwarf” species intended to allow faster, smoother putts. Yeah, but can you smoke it?

If you’re a golf snob, then you don’t mind the drive to some of Georgia’s premiere golf courses with lush grounds, breathtaking views and heart-stopping greens fees. But we prefer to stay a bit closer to home and use our nine irons at the NORTH FULTON GOLF COURSE. Owned by the city of Atlanta and situated next to Chastain Park, the par-3 and 4 course offers some of the most affordable golf (under $50) in the state. (Before the city took it over, the course was home to a pre-Masters PGA tournament.) It’s the perfect place for executives and amateurs alike to spend an afternoon. But if you go on the weekends, get there early to avoid at least a 30-minute wait.

“I have three that are my favorite. White Columns, because it’s always maintained well, has a friendly staff and is not lined with houses. Crooked Creek has a beautiful layout and is very accessible. Windermere has a good Davis Love design and a fun layout. I’m very involved in the game. I don’t talk and joke much. I take it very seriously. The more I travel around the country, the more I realize how spoiled we are here. It’s hard to find a town that has as many great golf courses as Atlanta. I will not narrow it down to my one favorite. I can’t.

We don’t really understand why you can’t go to East Lake Golf Club. Since 1994, the East Lake course’s renovation has continued, and next year the course will host the U.S. Amateur tournament. Also, the clubhouse boasts one of the largest collections of Bobby Jones memorabilia.
