Neon lights. Polished chrome. Coca-Cola red trim. A Braves game blares at one end of the room. A disheveled dude mumbles every other word by the sportscaster. It’s not just the wiener that makes the Varsity our favorite dog pound, it’s the stuff that surrounds it. A perfectly hot, soft bun. An ooze of chili or slaw. Sometimes, you find the highest quality in the most average locale. In 1992, Philly native Barton Frank (even his name says hotdog) opened Barty’s in a nondescript strip mall near Northlake. He settled on an extra-large, skinless variety of a Sabrett wiener, the filet mignon of Manhattan street vendors, and eventually decided broiling made them taste best. Care and quality permeates Frank’s shop: a flavorful beanless chili, fresh condiments and shaded tables. All for $2.34. A bonus: Frank’s homemade pretzels may also be the best of their kind in Atlanta.
