Atlanta’s internationally recognized soul scene wouldn’t have a brick-and-mortar hub without Moods Music in Little Five Points. Owner Darryl Harris celebrates 13 years in business this month, which is practically a lifetime in independent-record-store years. From vintage to nu soul, Moods Music is all about supporting the genre in all its glorious forms. Moods is also known for its special events, whether it’s hosting in-store appearances for out-of-town artists such as Australia’s Hiatus Kaiyote before a recently scheduled concert or throwing a listening party and meet-and-greet for Atlanta-based favorites like Anthony David. Besides carrying an extensive collection of CDs from hyperlocal to global acts, Moods has expanded its product line to include live performances and classic black films on DVD, a line of Moods Music T-shirts, and complimentary teas for regulars. And the couches provide a perfect place to lounge while vibing to the sounds. With nurturing like that, it’s no wonder why the city’s soul community continues to flourish.

There are many fine independent music stores across Atlanta, but for sheer inventory none of them can match GUITAR CENTER. The store is a guitar player’s paradise, walls covered with all types of electric guitars and basses, and a mind-numbing array of amplifiers and effects boxes. There’s a room for acoustic guitars, and separate areas with keyboards, drum gear and pro audio. Looking for a 1958 Stratocaster? There’s space set aside for rare guitars. The customer service is excellent and we just go ga-ga over all those Fenders and Gibsons.

Way back in the day, guitar companies used to make 600 axes a year, as opposed to pumping out thousands of units per day. ATLANTA VINTAGE GUITAR specializes in those rare, high-quality guitars, mandolins, banjos, and amplifiers that rock stars and collectors drool over. Take, for instance, the 1955 Gretch 6130 Les Paul-shaped hollow-body guitar with rhinestone-encrusted leather edging, on sale now for a measly $15,000. But you don’t have to be that die hard, or rich, to find cool stuff. Case in point: a 1969 original Danelectro Silvertone, going for 100 bucks. Rock on. “561 Windy Hill Road, Smyrna. 770-433-1891.”

Since 1978, local musicians have made frequent trips to ATLANTA DISCOUNT MUSIC for all their equipment needs. ADM’s commitment to the independent spirit and support of the local scene has made regular customers of typically picky and often hard-to-please artists. Local CDs and flyers are featured prominently. A knowledgeable staff of music pros and a great selection of name-brand items have made the decidedly modest facade storefront a heaven for beginners, professionals and even a few celebrities to congregate, swap guitars and share advice. “3701 Clairmont Road. 770-457-3400. www.atlantadiscountmusic.com.”
