"Authentic" is a word that gets thrown around so much, it's easy to forget what it means. Quan Ba 9 will make you remember. This isn't your standard brusque pho house. Expect home-style Vietnamese packed with soulful, herbaceous flavor. Tart salads made with shreds of green papaya and laced with tiny dried shrimp start the meal off on a light note and pave the way for more hearty fare. The signature spicy red chicken soup, Mi Quang Ba 9, is so soothing (in that fiery sort of way), it should be the only thing anyone's allowed to eat when sick. The pho rings clear with beefy flavor and bright herbs. The Chao Ga is basically an intensely chicken-y porridge. Like, the most delicious porridge you've ever had. Even Goldilocks wouldn't push this bowl away. Quan Ba 9 will have you swearing off that other place across the street for good. 4285 Buford Highway. 404-636-2999. less...

There's little more satisfying than a big bowl of pho, and PHO DAI LOI RESTAURANT makes the best. The broth is clear with no sediment or heavy anise flavor, and the noodles never stick together. There's little more satisfying than a big bowl of pho, and PHO DAI LOI RESTAURANT makes the best. The broth is clear with no sediment or heavy anise flavor, and the noodles never stick together. Other items such as the spring rolls and the bun (a large bowl of cold rice noodles topped with meat and/or seafood, herbs, lettuce and nuoc cham sauce) are consistently delicious alternatives. Fresh lemonade fizzy with soda water, traditional Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk, and fun bubble tea drinks filled with tapioca pearls are a welcome departure from that tired old glass of Coca-Cola. less...

We’re still wholly enamored with COM VIETNAMESE GRILL more than two years after it opened and set foodie hearts ablaze with grilled meats, bold herbs and a swanker atmosphere than you’ll find at the pho houses that populate the rest of Buford Highway. It’s still the best in town at marrying home-style dishes with high-quality ingredients and friendly service. When you’re in the mood for spice, mint, basil, charred meat and vermicelli, this is the place to go. less...

COM VIETNAMESE GRILL took the foodie population by storm when it opened more than a year ago. Food & Wine magazine even gave it national acclaim as a “best.” What’s so good? Deliciously marinated and grilled meats — pork, beef, duck — wrapped in grape leaves, served over rice or vermicelli with herbs and raw vegetables. Even the tofu is spectacular. The staff is completely fluent in English, so you don’t have to play charades to get a good meal. less...

There are dozens of Vietnamese restaurants in our city, including those that cater to gourmet-minded American palates. This year, we have to cite COM VIETNAMESE GRILL. This small cafe’s menu is a completely unique riff on classic street food, like apple and papaya salad but here garnished with roasted duck, if you choose. You can top vermicelli with a selection of ground meats (including lamb) rolled into la lot leaves, which resemble grape leaves and are said to be good for hiccups and nausea. There are amazingly spiced mussels scattered with peanuts, and our favorite special, roasted rabbit. less...
