With rapid gentrification eating up Atlanta many of Atlanta's mainstays, Mammal Gallery could've easily died after they lost their space in March. However, if we know anything about the city's creative scene, it's that life finds a way even in the darkest hour. Since relocating to their temporary location on Mitchell Street, the Mammal crew have kept the dream alive with innovative and thought-provoking exhibitions that highlight the idiosyncrasy that lives under the Gold Dome. less...

Attend an opening at KAI LIN ART and you’ll be struck by the diversity of the folks in attendance: a congregation of all races, ages and levels of artistic expertise. That audience diversity is undoubtedly due to the divergent range of art that hangs on the gallery’s walls — which this past year displayed the surreal paintings of Thomas Turner, the pop art of Chris Hobé, the patterned portraits of Lela Brunet and many more. Founded in 2008 by owner/director Yu-Kai Lin, Kai Lin Art’s mission to promote “emerging and established artists in the Southeast and beyond” is one that adds to the richness of Atlanta, on a cultural and a social level. 999 Brady Ave. N.W., Suite 7. 404-408-4248. www.kailinart.com.

In the last year NOTCH 8 has quietly emerged as one of the guaranteed spots to find the artists defining ATL’s otherground arts scene. From Paper Frank and Corey Davis to Artemus Jenkins and Dubelyoo, the artists embody an innovative, left-leaning aesthetic and Notch 8’s shows draw crowds well into the hundreds on opening nights. Co-founded by City of Ink’s Miya Bailey and Sharon Dennehy, Notch 8 is a place not only to view dope art, but to buy it. At least that’s the goal for Bailey, who has said his focus includes making collectors out of casual appreciators. At his March show, Before I’m Gone Vol. 1: The Art of Miya Bailey, works started at $100. With its vision and the cool to back it up, Notch 8 has surpassed gallery status to become ground zero for many of the city’s creatives. less...

Tucked behind a burger chain in a high-end shopping center, Poem 88 is easy to miss. The gallery doesn't exhibit the biggest names in Atlanta or have the highest profile, but it has cultivated a core audience that keeps returning. And for good reasons that go beyond the typical exhibition: There is heady experimental music by groups such as Chamber Cartel, soulful folk performances, small-press books in the shop, and film screenings of art house favorites. When the programming coincides - as it did with the exhibition Blow-Up and a Michelangelo Antonioni film series - it creates an opportunity for the audience to look at the work on the walls in a new light, to see the connections between inspiration and action. less...

There's something wonderfully raw and unpretentious about self-taught artist Lloyd Benjamin's Westside art space Get This! Gallery. Benjamin tools casually around the gallery in jeans and a T-shirt, the band-aids on his fingers alluding to the manual labor taking place in the frame shop he runs out of the back of the building. In the same way that Benjamin creates a laid-back feel in his immaculate space, he lends a sense of polish to emerging local artists, such as street art duo Paper Twins, when their works find a place on his walls. Jill Storthz's time-trippy Woodcuts and the Jiha Moon-curated printmaking survey Life Iconic rounded out a year of compelling exhibits. 662 11th St. 678-596-4451. getthisgallery.com. less...
