Nestled inside Krog Street Market sits the tiniest chocolate factory in Atlanta — and maybe the nation. Husband and wife team Elaine Read and Matt Weyandt opened XOCOLATL back in 2014 and have been steadily churning chocolate bars (and their highly addictive drinking chocolate — hot in the winter and frozen in the summer) out of their miniscule 250-something-square-foot space ever since. The couple is serious about ingredients and sourcing. All bars are single origin and start with a base of just cane sugar and pure cacao from South and Central America. Walk into MAISON ROBERT, a little gray house off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, and you find yourself in a chilled room where the unmistakably bewitching scent of chocolate hangs heavy in the air. The small retail space is filled with variously decorated boxes all containing Robert Reeb’s glorious handmade chocolates (during the holidays, he also makes the boxes out of chocolate). A silver-wrapped 1-pound box should do you nicely, though be sure to grab a couple chocolate-dipped macaroons as well. Y’all, this ain’t no Whitman Sampler. For the past 20 years, Frenchman Robert Reeb and wife Patricia at MAISON ROBERT FINE CHOCOLATES have inspired a cult following for their handmade European-style chocolates that put Godiva to shame. Grand Marnier truffle, rum fondant, cognac truffle with candied violet - delectable creations that will make you head due north to the romantic little cottage off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
