In recent months, Coca-Cola officials have explored ways to cut billions in expenses to reorganize the soft-drink empire. What does that does mean for workers? Yep, you guessed it: layoffs.

Coca-Cola this morning announced plans to cut up to 1,800 positions. An estimated 500 Atlanta-based employees face jobs cuts, amounting to nearly 4 percent of the company's 13,000 local workers.

"We do not take decisions about job impacts lightly," a Coca-Cola spokeswoman Ann Moore said in a statement. "We have committed that we will ensure fair, equitable and compassionate treatment of our people throughout the process."

Back in June 2013, officials announced that the Atlanta-based soft-drink corporation would "invest in our hometown" by moving approximately 2,000 IT positions to a new Downtown Atlanta location.

"Positions in all parts of our business and at various levels are being eliminated as we work to make our operations more efficient," Moore tells CL in an email.
