Uniform, Nurse, Slugga: A look at the shape of ATL punk to come
Three promising Atlanta punk acts play one last show in 2014, before carrying momentum created by their first batches of demos into the new year.
This year's final Atlanta hardcore show may be a glimpse at the local scene's future, as Uniform, Nurse, and Slugga are fresh off the release of promising demos.
- State Laughter
Demo 1 by Uniform
Uniform’s brand of raw punk would work, both sonically and lyrically, as the soundtrack to a dystopian world, like the one described in "Algorithm Man." Bringing this alternate reality to life is two-thirds of Wymyn’s Prysyn, Josh Feigert (vocals, guitar) and Bobby Michaud (drums), as well as bassist Matt Gibson Hatcher (Cheap Art, Slugga), and Bobby’s brother, guitarist David Michaud (Dasher, Stepdad SS). The band's first demo cassette was recently issued by Feigert’s State Laugher label.
Demo 2014 by Nurse
Another veteran ensemble that recently unveiled its first batch of demos is Nurse. Like Uniform, Nurse features two-thirds of an established local trio. Cheap Art’s Bryan Scherer (guitar) and Andrew Wilson (drums) continue their power violence assault alongside David Michaud (bass) and Slugga’s Mark Bonner (guitar). Though its demo only exists now as a free digital download, a Muckman Records cassette is in the works.
Demo by Slugga
Perhaps the most promising of the Atlanta punk's Class of 2014 is Slugga, whose raw aggression has already netted a Muckman demo cassette. Plans for the New Year include a forthcoming 7-inch on Orlando’s Total Punk Records, and an appearance in March alongside Wymyn’s Prysyn and Predator at the second annual Total Punk Total Fuck-Off Festival. Its members are not all from the same pool of local hardcore and punk lifers, pairing Nurse's Bonner (vocals) and Uniform's Hatcher (drums) with Untied States' Skip Engelbrecht and the rare fresh face in bassist Louise Slugga.
Breakout (Austin, TX), Uniform, Nurse, and Slugga play the Earl tonight (Tues., Dec. 30). $5. 9 p.m. 488 Flat Shoals Ave. www.badearl.com
