Some Kind of Hate: JDDP's debut, Nurse and Paradox's new 7-inches, and the vast imagination of Woven In
The best new metal, punk, and surf sounds to hit the internet in recent weeks, including Paradox and Nurse's forthcoming records and JohnDenver DeathPlane's heavy and melodic debut.
Degradations: The Wizkid Sessions
Degradations : The Wizkid Sessions (Live Tracks) by Degradations
Degradations recently had eight cuts of its sludgy take on doom metal recorded live at Wizkid Sound. Highlights include three rough takes of brand new songs. While “Holy Shit” is a pulse-pounding doom metal assault and “Cattywampus” is a trudging stoner jam, “Amon Adoom” contains elements of both in one of the band’s strongest attempts at blending its influences.
JohnDenver DeathPlane: JDDP digital album
jddp by JohnDenver DeathPlane
JohnDenver DeathPlane bassists Josh Lamar (Mondo Generator, Meen) and Aaron Hendrickson (Nigredo) and drummer Dwayne Jones (Order of the Owl) are basically the solid rhythm section at the backbone of every stoner and doom metal band’s sonic attack. But instead of working with a guitarist or three, the twin bass attack uses the mandatory stack of amps themselves. Standout cuts on the band’s debut, such as “The Devil Knows Its Own,” are as melodic as a Queens of the Stone Age hit, crossed with a healthy dose of noise rock brashness.
Nurse: Untitled 7-inch
Both sides of Nurse’s forthcoming vinyl debut were posted on Soundcloud in late May, with all four unlabeled tracks exceeding high expectations set by last year’s demo cassette. The band added singer Aaron Smith (Manic) since recording its demo, strengthening an already stacked lineup that pairs Cheap Arts’ Bryan Scherer (guitar) and Andrew Wilson (drums) with Dasher’s David Michaud (bass) and Slugga singer Mark Bonner (guitar). Though the band has not strayed far from Scherer and Wilson’s power violence roots, there’s something ominous and guttural about these self-anointed “funeral hardcore” cuts.
Paradox: Split 7-inch with Koszmar (Imminent Destruction Records)
Koszmar Split by Paradox
Paradox’s blurring of the paper-thin line between crusty d-beat and lightning-quick metal has made the band an ideal addition to any punk or metal bill around town for the past few years. Tracks such as the brooding and blasphemous opening track “Hordes,” from a forthcoming split 7-inch with Vancouver’s Koszmar, should spread the word further that Paradox can play one night with Uniform and the next with Hellgoat without redirecting most of the cigarette smokers in the building to the nearest sidewalk.
Woven In: Feel CD
Feel by Woven In
As a guitarist Mariah Johnson has a knack for crafting beautifully haunting surf and shoegaze arrangements; but the sticking point of Johnson's recordings as Woven In is her powerful voice. Her talents and imagination are responsible for all you hear, sans drums, on tracks such as the surf rock meets darkwave “Ninety-nine Percent Wet” and atmospheric slow jam “Shallow.” Johnson is as dynamic a DIY artist as you’ll find in town, a truth accentuated by this latest set of recordings.
