The Supremes' first #1 hit, "Where Did Our Love Go," turns 50
turns 50
On Aug. 22, 1964, the Supremes gained mainstream success with their single, "Where Did Our Love Go," which peaked at the #1 spot in the U.S. and across the pond. From then on, the Supremes achieved international super stardom, and their 1964 hit-streak broke the record for the most #1 hits by an American band in one year (5 total). Later releases within that one-year mark included; "Baby Love," "Come See About Me," "Stop! In the Name of Love," and "Back in My Arms Again."
The group formed a trio in 1962, and Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson, partnered with Motown Records and producers, Holland—Dozier—Holland, who aided in the ladies attaining their well-earned fame. The Supremes became the most prominent and recognized female group in the '60s, even when their emergence surfaced at the height of girl group successors like the Marvelettes, the Shirelles, and the Ronettes. However, the ladies were indeed, supreme, with their humble, yet poised freshness to the girl pop game.
The song was recorded on three overlapping tracks; one for rhythm, another for horns, and the last for vocals. As a result, the clamorous shuffle, kick drum stomping, quick snaps, light melodies, Ross' soft lead, and ephemeral harmonies are enough reasons for this song to have made it to number one.
What's the #1 single on today's charts? That would be the boy band, Rude, with their song called "Magic!"
