Sean Price’s new song of sorts “Angel Dust” reminds me of the first time I heard an artist rap over a sample of Gil-Scott Heron’s classic of the same title:

Featured on the Coup’s 1998 release Steal This Album, “Me and Jesus the Pimp in a ’79 Granada Last Night” is the kind of tale emcee Boots Riley excels at — equally seductive and cautionary. Spoiler alert: In the end he offs his pops the pimp, played by actor Roger Guenveur Smith (“Smiley” from Do the Right Thing).
