NOTED ACTS

DEKE DEAN'S ROCKABILLY OPEN MIC NIGHT — Blue Avenue bandleader/guitarist Deke Dean rides herd on a host of rowdy rockabillies each Tuesday evening during these open mic nights at the Northside. The Dean Machine plays a few numbers with the house band and then invites various cats from the crowd to hop up onstage and join and the fun. Northside Tavern (Nicoll)

MICHAEL MAGNO — A cheerful, cherubic acoustic rocker from Florida, Magno mixes up Latin rhythms and sugar-coats the results with his citrus-sweet singing voice. He's opening tonight for Sally Smithwick, who is emphatically not a member of Smithwick Machine. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

SHIPPING NEWS — Fans of Rodan, June of 44 and various Louisville art-punk outfits will certainly appreciate this muscular, mostly instrumental, mostly emo-ish trio (which features members of all of the above). Echo Lounge (Sarig)

THIRD EYE BLIND — From their bland, reprocessed brand of alt-pop to lead singer Stephan Jenkins I-am-rockstar-hear-me-roar attitude, there's no shortage of reasons to hate these guys. That being said, "Anything," the two-minute burst of power-pop that opened their otherwise forgettable (and mostly forgotten) recent album, Blue, is still ringing around my brain, nine months after I first heard it. Not enough of a reason to spend 15 bucks to stand through the rest of their dreck, but at least a sign that when they bother, these guys are actually capable of something worthwhile. Tabernacle (Peisner)
