Sound Menu August 19 2000 Sat

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19

?NOTED ACTS
?KENNY BARRON — No pianist today — jazz or otherwise — has anything on Kenny Barron. Although his latest, richly orchestrated release, Spirit Song on Verve, has received very positive accolades, Barron’s improvisations are such things of beauty that only the uncluttered sounds of a trio present appropriate backing. With his illustrious touring ensemble of bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Ben Riley, Barron’s beautiful, rich tone and ultra-dynamic approach receive ample support. This will undoubtedly be one of the best jazz concerts of the year in Atlanta. Spivey Hall (Rozzi)

B.B. KING BLUES FESTIVAL — See listing for August 18. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Horowitz)

ELVIS DEATH DAY OBSERVANCE WITH KINGSIZED — Mighty Mike Geier brings his swingin’ ensemble Kingsized to the stage again to commemorate the King’s passing. The real treat tonight, though, may well be Sister Amy & the El-Vangelical Choir, featuring former Continentals vocalist Amy Pike. (These Elvis shows always sell out, so be sure to come early!) Star Bar (Nicoll)

FUTUREFEST 2000 — After a promising but, by many accounts, lightly-attended electronic music extravaganza last year, Futurefest returns for a second time with a lineup of over 50 acts and DJs that looks to be at least as strong as the first time. The techno lineup boasts the Detroit threesome credited with inventing the genre: Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, as well as a live performance by Astralwerks act Gearwhore. The trance menu includes BT, Electric Skychurch, Skylab2000 and Atlanta’s own Dean Coleman, while the jungle/hip-hop arena features the Jungle Brothers and DJ Rap. For more info, see www.futurefest.net. Henderson’s Arena/4380 Stacks Road (Sarig)

HALCYON — The popular Florida combo, who comes across like some fresh-squeezed Sunshine State version of the Indigo Girls, play two sets tonight at this CD release show: 7 p.m. (all-ages) and 9:30 p.m. (21-and-up). Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)

MAD KATE — Murder ballads, ghost songs and laments of unrequited love pour forth from Mad Kate, purveyor of Southern gothic sounds. Dottie’s (Sarig)

MOODSWING RECORDS SHOWCASE — See Earshot. Echo Lounge (Smith)

TOMMY THOMPSON, JASON MARCUM BAND, ANDY BROWNE — Tommy Thompson headlines a rare acoustic show at the Earl, a triple bill that also features Jason Marcum (a winner of Eddie’s Attic’s open mic events) and a solo appearance by Andy Browne (a veteran of the Niteporters and, more recently, Moonbase 5). The Earl (Nicoll)

U-ROY — See article, p. 83. Performing with Sister Carol, Johnny Osbourne, Brigadier Jerry, Bunny Brown, Covasia and Dignitary. Planet Q (Dominey)
