?Noted Acts?

A PERFECT CIRCLE, SUNNA — Although A Perfect Circle is the pet project of former Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails guitar tech Billy Howerdel, the band’s biggest claim-to-fame is sharing lead singer Maynard James Keenan with the mega-selling Tool. While Maynard’s presence likely helped boost the sales of that band’s self-titled debut to gold status, Howerdel’s intricate guitar work and songwriting skills certainly didn’t hurt either. Newcomers Sunna open the show. Described as “sinister post-millennial rock,” this English band sounds more like a pre-millennial hangover of post-grunge, genre mongering. Combining a bit of Nirvana’s edgy melodic explosiveness with a hearty share of Nine Inch Nails-ish industrial-sized beats yields oddly reactionary results. While admittedly attractive to the ears, ultimately it comes off as a bit old hat. Tabernacle (Williams/Robertson)

IMMORTAL LEE COUNTY KILLERSSee article. Star Bar (Nicoll)

THE RIPPINGTONS — Pumping out more CDs than IHOP serves pancakes, the Ripps have saturated the smooth jazz airwaves for longer than we care to realize. Their latest, Topaz, virtually drops us off in Taos, New Mexico — a sultry, dry place dear to bandleader Russ Freeman’s heart. As the Rippingtons are not shy with regard to amplification, the musical results will be easily heard in spite of Chastain’s conversing crowd — a most appropriate musical act for those acting up.
