NOTED ACTS

BLOODKIN — Athens’ finest trad-rockers record a live album for New York imprint Phoenix Records tonight. One could hardly imagine a better setting either. Bloodkin’s music, an amalgam of raw, Stonesy rock and lyricist Daniel Hutchens’ thoughtful barroom philosophizing, already feels steeped in whiffs of stale beer and acrid smoke. Real “classic rock” (in the best sense of the term) that you haven’t already heard a zillion times before. Smith’s Olde Bar (Robertson)

ERIC TAYLOR, DAVID OLNEY, RICHARD BICKNELL, DENICE FRANKE — David Olney is no stranger to Atlanta, and his songs resonate with a craftsman’s touch (see review on p. 111). Texas songwriter/guitarist Eric Taylor is as warm and comforting as a fireplace on a winter’s night. Denice Franke, another Texan on the bill, brings the sweetly wisened voice of a woman who has lived to tell the tale. The honey-voiced Bicknell brings his down-home torch ‘n’ (occasionally) twanging folk rock to this show. In a truly collaborative spirit the four will perform together, with Bicknell’s band backing them up. Tonight’s in-the-round show should be a joyful wonder to behold. Eddie’s Attic (Smith/Robertson)

YOUNG ANTIQUES, GRUMPY — Antiques frontman Blake Rainey is one of the brightest — and liveliest — stars in the local pop/rock constellation. A blazing ball of energy onstage, he’s also a damn good lyricist, as several compositions on his band’s just-released disc amply prove. This show is the trio’s CD release party. Another Atlanta threesome, the mighty Grumpy, will warm up the house with some heavy rock ‘n’ roll fireworks of their own. Star Bar (Nicoll)
