BEAT COLLABORATIVE BENEFIT — Two dozen DJs and live electronic acts take part in this Labor Day benefit for WRAS 88.5, Georgia State’s mighty college radio station. The lineup reads like a who’s who (and occasionally, who’s that?) of the local spin-trade, with Eve & Motomasa, Kemit, Patrick Scott, Gene Carbonell, Team Rollers and Rydim Ryderz all scheduled to man the tables. D’ANGELO, LUCY PEARL — How would it feel to see this male eye candy’s washboard torso in the flesh? Orgasmic perhaps. The preacher’s kid can really put on a show; those who missed his last local visit got a taste of it on VH-1’s “Men Strike Back,” where he threw down with a live band and the legendary Tom Jones. Ladies, carry some extra underthings. This may be a bra-throwing night. Judging from the packed house at their recent Variety Playhouse show, Lucy Pearl could fill the amphitheater on their own. That the all-star trio, combining members of A Tribe Called Quest, Tony Toni Tone and En Vogue, serves as the opening act indicates the strength of this new-soul bill. DRIVE-INVASION — The three days of bands, barbecue and B-movies conclude with a diverse afternoon of tunes, hosted by California crazy man Johnny Legend. Performing acts include the suave swingers of Kingsized, the ’60s spy-movie twang of the Penetrators, the Beatle-esque bop of the Lizardmen, the bluesrockin’ power of Johnny Knox and the authentic ’50s rockabilly of the Blacktop Rockets. FACE TO FACE — This decade-old So-Cal punk/pop quartet let fans choose the 12 songs that make up its sixth album, and first for a major label. Two million responses later, the resulting album — which only runs 37 minutes and could easily have been expanded without all the PR hoopla — sounds pretty much like anything else they’ve released. Three chords, lots of energy, along with a few catchy riffs and choruses don’t raise the bar for the band or their genre, but provide enough quality raw material for their typically energized, sweaty, in-your-face shows. LABOR DAY BLUES BBQ — This annual fund-raiser for community radio station WRFG 89.3 FM features a bevy of local blues talent. In addition to headliner Tinsley Ellis, featured artists include Francine Reed, Delta Moon, Little Pink Anderson, Pig Iron and a host of others. Can you think of a better way to celebrate this most American of holidays than with the blues and a plate full of ‘Q? I didn’t think so. Studioplex/659 Auburn Avenue (Robertson)
