NOTED ACTS

BATTLEFIELD BAND — Now in their third decade, one of Scotland’s premier traditional bands are still driven by pipes, fiddle and great vocals. Since they last played Atlanta, they’ve acquired seasoned singer/songwriter Davey Steele, who has a gorgeous voice. He fits in beautifully on both traditional material and similarly-styled originals. Variety Playhouse (Falstaff)

COLLEGE URBAN MUSIC FESTIVAL — The sixth annual black college fest continues today with more music business seminars and parties around the Atlanta University Center. For more information, call 770-908-6102. various locations (Sarig)

DEBBIE DAVIES — You don’t get to be second guitarist in the legendary Albert Collins’ band for three years on good looks alone, and Davies has proven over the course of five solid solo albums that she can hold her own in the male-dominated blues field. Although she won’t be touring with Stevie Ray Vaughn’s rhythm section, with whom she recorded her last album, Davies’ sharp solos, convincing vocals, no-nonsense stage presence and mix of tuneful originals and snappy covers keeps the energy level high and the crowd’s attention focused. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)

DELUXE VAUDEVILLE ORCHESTRA — Revisiting a smorgasbord of musical genres (including tangos, rancheras and American standards), the DVO are a local eight-piece trawling the past with a respectful smirk. Which is to say, they avoid uptight revivalism (a buoyant, south o’ the border version of Del Shannon’s “Runaway” is proof enough of that), instead intent on capturing the music’s inherent giddiness. The perfect soundtrack for a night out dancing or a post-modern Laurel & Hardy short. Art Station Theatre (Robertson)

GREG CONNORS AND THE CURB, ADAM LELAND, PIGON — An assortment of local guitar slingers graces the Star Bar stage tonight, as longtime scene-survivor Connors rocks the house in the company of jangle-pop lord Leland and the irrepressibly animalistic Pigon. Star Bar (Nicoll)

SAMIAM — Samiam has followed the three P’s to music success — power, punk, pop. It has worked moderately well, and the California band has endured several lineup changes since it formed way back in the ’80s. They’re currently touring their latest release, Astray. Masquerade (Allen)

THEE PHANTOM 5IVE — Tennessee surf-rock twangsters Thee Phantom 5ive make a stop in the Big Peach on their journey south to the Florida beach. (The group currently includes frontman Todd “Retodd” Williams as well as two other musicians from their first lineup and new member whom Retodd claims was once affiliated with John Barry!) The 5ive have issued an open challenge to Rip Thrillby of the Penetrators for a surf guitar showdown at this gig. The Earl (Nicoll)

TRANS AM, NEIL HAMBURGER — See Trans Am article, p. 89. Opening act Neil Hamburger is a fake comedian; that is, he’s a funnyman whose shtick is that he’s not funny. Get it? If watching him perform sounds like your idea of either entertainment or “performance art,” consider yourself an apologist for a naked emperor. For most of us, a piece of shit that claims to be a rose is still a piece of shit, and so is Hamburger (and for that matter, so is otherwise admirable indie label Drag City for thinking that releasing this guy’s records would somehow be cutting edge in that oh-so-inscrutable sort of way). Echo Lounge (Sarig)
