NOTED ACTS
DAVE MATTHEWS BAND — The king of the live album, with four already released (three of them doubles), has achieved unprecedented success though his mix of watered-down Paul Simon world beats, Dead-style jamming and an "aw-shucks" persona that drives the girls wild. Not as funky as Widespread or as unpredictably wacky as Phish, Matthews and his talented, eclectic band do more with fiddle, sax and acoustic guitar than any other stadium band in history, and his willingness to push the envelope by employing the Kronos Quartet strings and Bela Fleck is admirable. Live, you'll get what you pay for, with Matthews' well-oiled concert machine pumping out extended versions of already long songs played for exuberant, multi-generational fans who'll lap up every last lick. Lakewood Amphitheater (Horowitz)
ANGELA JUI LEE — Dressed in traditional Chinese adornments, local musician Angela Jui Lee performs a free concert on the ancient Chinese stringed instrument gu-zheng. Borders Books and Music/Buckhead (Sarig)
LOOKOUT! FREAKOUT TOUR — Whatever relevance punk rock may retain in the current post-millennial, been-there-done-that, Blink 182-malaise we live in, one can always take comfort in California's Lookout! Records. Their impressive roster keeps the faith, diverse in delivery yet united in their effort to keep punk something more than a fashion statement. This tour features two Lookout! bands: pop-punk standard-bearers the Mr. T Experience and the harder (though also melodic) Clash-like stylings of American Steel. 513 Club (Robertson)
MUSICIANS HELPING HANDS — This show is a benefit for Andy Palen, a well-known local music tech whose residence was recently destroyed by fire. The show will feature an all star jam featuring members from Michelle Malone & Drag the River, the Georgia Satellites, .38 Special, A.R.S., the Outlaws, Kansas, Mother's Finest and a host of others. Cotton Club (Robertson)
