Sound Menu September 16 2000 Tues
Noted acts for Tuesday, Sept. 19
BLACK WATCH AND PRINCE OF WALES BAND — With a history going back over 250 years, the military-style pipe-and-drum regiment certainly know how to kick it old-school. Coming to Atlanta for the first time in 15 years, the group takes formation on the Fox stage for a rare local performance. Fox Theatre (Sarig)
TRACY CHAPMAN — Tracy Chapman seems to be getting to know herself better each time out. In her latest release, Telling Stories, she doesn't pose for effect. She merely acts naturally, and the result is evident in mature songs with melodic folksiness and purposeful lyrics. Chapman might have started with a "Fast Car," but she's cruising now. Tabernacle (Allen)
DEKE DEAN'S ROCKABILLY OPEN MIC — The mic is wide open for any rowdy rockabillies who care to sit in with Dean's band Blue Avenue, or who wish to hop on stage with a whole band of their own. Local pompadour-sporting celebs such as Brent Cashman (of the Cashmen) and the ubiquitous Johnny Knox have been among recent participants. Northside Tavern (Nicoll)
MIKAEL STAVOSTRAND, MOLJEBKA PULSE — Both of these Swedish soloists specialize in artificial atmospheres for the modern alienist. Computers play a main role in the mutation of sound into strains that give Luddites the willies. Moljebka Pulse's Koan CD is like being alone in a room with massive machines buzzing on idle, waiting impatiently to crank up. Stavostrand's work resembles lifeforms arranging themselves from some primordial slop. If you're looking for the beats to slip in, forget it. These guys aren't making introductions for disco songs, this stuff is an end unto itself. Eyedrum (Foy)
