SAT/OCTOBER 7
BORN TO PLEASE, SHARKS AND MINNOWS, OPPYMUS BLUE, ELVIS CHICKEN — Born to Please, a new band on the scene, is coming out like gangbusters, playing all over Atlanta, hitting all the punkier clubs in the span of just a few weeks. A band that plays out this much should certainly be pleasing someone. Sharks and Minnows are swimming in the deep end of the ocean tonight, floating around in a feeding-frenzy with the dark-hued Oppymus Blue and a bucket of original recipe Elvis Chicken. Club 513 (Smith)
CUBANISMO! — Swaggering, exuberant trumpet from Jesus Alemay leads this large fiery London-based Latin ensemble, whose ’90s Havana sessions with vocalist Rojitas (made under the watchful eye of veteran producer Joe Boyd) cracked Billboard’s tropical/salsa Top 10. Their latest outing, Mardi Gras Mambo, sees them try out a fascinating, cross-cultural blend of (in their own words) “gumbo son from Cuborleans.” See also article. Variety Playhouse (Falstaff)
THE JOHN DOE THING, MARY LOU LORD, MATT NATHANSON — Former X-man John Doe performs tonight with Don Bonebrake on drums — giving fans a chance to see what’s essentially half of X — but their set will lean more toward material from Doe’s current JDT album. (See also article). Mary Lou Lord is an angelically-voiced troubadour from Salem, MA who’s notable almost as much for her public feud with Courtney Love as for her own superb Joni-meets-Neil folk-rock songs. Opening act Matt Nathanson, who comes highly recommended by headliner Doe, is a San Francisco singer who sounds a bit like the lead vocalist of James; Charlie Gillingham (Counting Crows) is among the celebs who played on Nathanson’s recent 4-song demo. Echo Lounge (Nicoll)
DAN FOGELBERG — While it’s encouraging that laid-back, multi-platinum-selling singer/songwriter Fogelberg wants to try something different, the limp versions of blues classics from Blind Willie McTell and Muddy Waters on his new live album (oddly compiled from performances recorded 1992-1995) are completely misguided. It almost makes you yearn for the smarmy vacuousness of his ’70s Top 10 hits. If he sticks to those hits, Chastain’s wine-and-cheese crowd will be duly satisfied. Chastain Park (Horowitz)
FUNKJAZZKAFE — Lifelong Atlantan Jason Orr has managed to pull a Doug Henning on our collective asses, creating something out of nothing, turning a vibe into a visceral. The FunkJazzKafe regularly manages to transform the Tabernacle into a soul-drenched, funky cold party, replete with big-name surprise guests and enlightening conversation. Tabernacle (Whitaker)
ROCK*A*TEENS, THE GLANDS, 8-TRACK GORILLA — This is a CD release party in honor of the Rock*A*Teens brand new album, Sweet Bird of Youth, and they clearly have something to celebrate. It’s a grand, shambling, reverb-drenched mess, firmly in the tradition of their previous four albums, yet somehow surpassing all of them. The Glands, whose excellent Capricorn Records debut is currently caught in the ugly gears of the music industry, produce pop music as effervescent as Alka Seltzer itself. The ever-shocking 8-Track Gorilla frequently sends his audiences into fits of scratching, laughter and binge drinking with his karaoke renditions of everything from “Whip it” to “Saturday in the Park.” Earl (Peisner/Khalid)
HARVEST FESTIVAL — See listing for Oct. 6. Atlanta’s Back Porch/Fairburn (Kelly)
MATTHEW KAHLER — An energetic songwriter with a wacky sense of humor and James Taylor-esque voice celebrates the release of his first CD in four years. Out of the Blue was produced by Shawn Mullins, who is expected to join Kahler and his band on stage tonight. See also article. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)Also performing
