Noted acts
MOTO-LITAS, HELGAS, STIMULANTS — It’s a triple blast of punk power tonight as the retro new wave-ish Moto-Litas (whose perky, ’80s-style sound evokes Pylon, Oh-OK and the Side Effects) are joined by the all-male Helgas and that irrepressible, over-the-top, string-breaking all-girl trio, the Stimmies. See also Earshot. Star Bar (Nicoll)
SOME SOVIET STATION, THE MERCURY PROGRAM, CASIONOVA — Some Soviet Station are very young and intense, offering hope that yes, there is indeed good new music coming from Atlanta. Jesse Smith is the best screamer on the scene in years. The Mercury Program hope to blast-off in the middle spot of tonight’s show, ignited by sparks from an opening set by David Railey’s new side-project Casionova. The Earl (Smith)
TANNAHILL WEAVERS — Over three decades of recording and touring, the Tannahill Weavers have grown into one of Scotland’s national treasures. Their latest album, Alchemy, sees them continue to sing about historical/ political/social topics, often sung in dialects from the time of Robert Burns or earlier. They also belt out stirring traditional tunes, successfully integrating noisy bagpipes into a small acoustic ensemble, a concept they themselves helped to pioneer years ago. Variety Playhouse (Falstaff)
