Noted acts
AMERICAN DREAM — See Earshot. The Earl (Radford)
JENNY WHITE BENEFIT SHOW — There’s a very early start (doors open at 5 p.m., music begins at 6) for this benefit show. Jangly alt-rockers Film are the headliners, but new ’50s-style country/rockers the Blue Jays and the groovy popsters Heritage Cherry are also high on the bill. Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)
AT THE DRIVE IN, MURDER CITY DEVILS — A recent recipient of mountains of critical praise, At The Drive In is a rare bird that actually deserves it. The ferocious, rhythmic rock on their ambitious new album, Relationship of Command, proves that anger does not have to be a creative dead end. Falling somewhere between the Stranglers, the Doors and early Alice Cooper, the Seattle based garage punkers, the Murder City Devils have a decidedly bleak quality to their sleazy, grimy, wrong-side-of-the-tracks sound. Lead singer Spencer Moody’s one-note shouting growl can get a little irritating, but these guys have an eerily throbbing and distinctive sound, drenched in the booze, stale cigarettes and lowlife they sing about. Cotton Club (Peisner/Horowitz)
NO USE FOR A NAME — NUFAN have been kicking out the punk-rock jams fairly consistently since 1987, and although they’ve undergone numerous lineup changes, their latest release, More Betterness! proves they haven’t lost a step. It’s a frenetic, propulsive album that includes a sample of famed, Spanish-language soccer commentator Andreas Cantor and a worthy cover of the Pogues classic, “Fairytale in New York.”Masquerade (Ellis/Peisner)
SONGWRITERS-IN-THE-ROUND COMEDY SHOW — Described as “partly funny with a chance of fame!” this is a humorous variant on the usual in-the-round format. Chuck Brodsky, Tom Wolf and Gregory Fleeman are all hilarious enough, but you’d probably better have a few drinks to brace yourself before Carla Ulbrich breaks out her side-splitting new “F-word” song. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
TIN HAT TRIO — Effortlessly straddling the worlds of jazz, pop and classical music, the Bay-Area “chamber jazz” trio has earned well-deserved praise since their debut CD, Memory Is an Elephant came out last year. Now out with a second CD, Helium, Tin Hat Trio brings a live set that covers modern classical, folk, Gypsy jazz, tango, film music, bluegrass and rock — at times all in one song. Red Light Café (Sarig)
