Noted Acts
PEDRO THE LION, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, MOUNTAIN CON — Opening for Pedro the Lion, the emo-core-with-a-difference outfit that played in town less than six months back, are two very different Seattle groups. Indie pop quartet Death Cab for Cutie are graduates from the Built-to-Spill songwriting academy, though they’re hardly at the top of the class; their sometimes joyless artfulness can detract from the simply melodic joys of their genre. Mountain Consolidated combine blues, folk and rock sounds and sensibilities with hip-hop beats and scratches for something that approximates Beck’s “Loser” (sample song title: “The Urban Hicks A-Gonna Work It Out”). Echo Lounge (Sarig)
SOULFLY, DOWNSET — The dark tribal thunderstorm of Sepultura still lives in its founder Max Cavalera’s new creation Soulfly. Two CDs in, Cavalera’s vengeance is mighty. Not sure exactly what he’s so mad at — probably the same old angst of the individual versus technology. Whatever the specifics, you’ll feel the charge. It’s brutal, unique and packs some of the heaviest melodic winds in the metal world. Straight from the streets of South Central Los Angeles, rapcore dynamos Downset emerge with their third album and Epitaph Records debut, Check Your People. Imagine a Hispanic-fronted Pantera, imbued with the crushing musical dexterity of the Jesus Lizard — that’s Downset in an iron-clad nutshell. Tabernacle (Ellis)
EMMYLOU HARRIS, BUDDY MILLER — Two big doses of Americana, as Harris comes to town on the heels of her newest release Red Dirt Girl, which continues with the ethereal sound she discovered working with Daniel Lanois. Harris wrote most of the material on the new one, which is a rarity for her. Opener Buddy Miller is the epitome of blue.
