FRI/NOVEMBER 3
Noted acts
APHRODITE — The urban takeover continues as Pleazure brings back Aphrodite, the undisputed king of jump-up jungle, to Friday night’s “Playhouse,” traditionally a progressive trance night. Aphrodite’s hype breaks will make the Playhouse a jungle gym, giving dancers a real workout with sub-bass and sped-up hip-hop. Masquerade (Ware)
FOO FIGHTERS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE — After weathering Nirvana’s media maelstrom, Dave Grohl revealed he made a great frontman full of tongue-in-cheek theatrics. Anyone who saw the Foo Fighters open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers realize the Foo Fighters make the most of their arena-ready hits. The kind of hits opening act Queens of the Stone Age inspire, however, are bong hits, as their heavy stoner rock hangs heavy in the air, all fuzz effects aside, creating a smooth, mellow buzz that stays with you. Tabernacle (Ware)
CINDY LOU HARRINGTON & SHOWDOWN — Atlanta always “goes Nashville” when this fine local gal fires up her country rock twang-gang. Harrington’s band tonight includes Tom Wolf and Craig Rafuse, who are fine solo performers in their own right. This 90-minute performance is also a benefit for blind students in Dekalb County. The music starts at 8 p.m. Celebrity Rock Café (Nicoll)
KARL DENSON’S TINY UNIVERSE — Sax man for Lenny Kravitz during his most soulful Mama Said period, and founding member of West Coast bugaloo champions the Greyboy All-Stars, Karl Denson is the workingman’s jazz player. His Tiny Universe ensemble is nothing short of infectious, one of the very few acts righteously carrying the soul-jazz torch into the year 2000. Skip the club DJ and come experience true dance music. Variety Playhouse (Hutchinson)
OTIEL AND THE PEACEMAKERS — Stunning audiences since his days with Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, bass virtuoso Otiel Burbridge has got more chops than Benihana. Everyone’s favorite scatting, bass-slapping showstopper, Otiel is taking a break from his work as bassist for the Allman Brothers Band to explore his more funk-informed jazz roots in this relatively new solo project setting. Brandy House (Hutchinson)
PAT MCGEE BAND — To the uninitiated listener, Pat McGee Band’s brand of pretty acoustic guitar tunes and wistful lyricism should be instantly familiar. This is no-frills college soft rock delivered straight to your campus. But while they might not push the most inspiring material, PMB has attained a significant level of grassroots success thanks to a relentless touring schedule and a dedicated pursuit of that college audience. Roxy (Hutchinson)
6X, CATFIGHT!, PRETTY VACANT — Punk rock has never sounded sweeter than the way it’s played by Atlanta’s own 6X (who are celebrating the release of their explosive second CD tonight; see Earshot, p. 89) and Catfight! (who recently released their own sophomore disc). This is Catfight!’s final show with founding drummer Ann Ciovacco. Pretty Vacant gets things off to a ‘77-style start with their forceful, note-perfect Sex Pistols pastiche. Star Bar (Nicoll)
SUBSONICS, WONTONS, YOUNG ANTIQUES — Austin’s Wontons should be welcomed with open arms tonight by two other like-minded Atlanta trios. The Subsonics offer the sex-appeal and some glittery shake for the evening, while the Young Antiques continue to prove their worth, growing and ripening into one of the best rock ‘n’ roll bands in the city. The Earl (Smith)
SOULHAT — Not only has Soulhat vocalist Kevin McKinney got a name which might easily get him confused with drivin’ n’ cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney, he’s also got a voice that could get him mistaken for Shawn Mullins. McKinney sings with a soulfully Mullinsian growl across most of Soulhat’s new CD Experiment on a Flat Plane, but he really hits his stride with the more uptempo, humorous number “WNBA.” Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)
