TUES/NOVEMBER 7
Noted acts
MARILIN MANSON, GODHEAD, UNION UNDERGROUND — Alas poor Marilyn, his time as a portent of Western Civilization’s imminent collapse has passed. His Satanic hermaphrodite/marionette shtick looks pretty ridiculous now, especially given the truly ugly, thuggish antics of that ignoramus Eminem. Ah well, a torch (of some sort) has been passed, I suppose. Anyway, Manson’s music remains as cripplingly boring as ever, further illustrating that sometimes image is everything. Manson may not loan his visage to opening act Godhead, but he does loan his voice for “Break You Down,” off Godhead’s next album. Godhead mix fuzzy power chords with fuller vocals than most industrial bands, holding notes instead of hollering them. If you plan on traveling the Union Underground, Manson’s other opening act, you’ll probably be taking the trip in a Dragula, seeing as how Union Underground follow the well-worn roads of death rides and dead men blazed by Rob Zombie. Tabernacle (Robertson/Ware)
SHAGGY — Not many reggae artists can put serving in the Persian Gulf war and going mainstream on one resume. Shaggy is one of the few and the proud exceptions. In the early ’90s, his pop-friendly dancehall tunes like “Bombastic” inspired farm kids in Iowa to learn how to grind. Though none of his latest fare has proven as life changing, he stays true to the formula. Variety Playhouse (Noelzine)
MELVIN SEALS — Longtime Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals, accompanied by some current JGB members, brings 20 years of jamming experience to Atlanta. Brandy House (Ware)
THE SLACKERS — See review. Echo Lounge (Smith)
JIMMY THACKERY & THE DRIVERS — Journeyman guitarist Thackery has been churning out his fiery mix of Strat-fueled roots rockers with Hendrix-drenched blues for two decades, and exudes a nonchalant showmanship as he whips off licks of thundering intensity. Sure, he can play with his teeth, and behind his head, but he doesn’t need to grandstand to prove his talent. A frequent Atlanta visitor, Thackery always delivers a rugged and energetic show that’ll leave you wondering why he’s not playing halls 10 times the size of this comfy venue. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)
