SAT/NOVEMBER 18
Noted acts
ANONYMOUS 4, CHILINGIRIAN — If you like time travel, this is for you. Anonymous 4, the vocal quartet that began by jumping on the chant bandwagon, nowadays continues its musical journeys into more modern fare. Tonight they team up with the London-based Chilingirian String Quartet for a concert that spans the ages, ranging from the works of Haydn to a premiere by John Tavener, traversing a thousand years in a couple of hours. Spivey Hall (Brown)
CORROSION OF CONFORMITY — With a career spanning 18 years, the seminal Raleigh, N.C., hardcore outfit C.O.C. has been together as long as many hardcore contemporaries have been alive. Throughout the ’80s and ’90s C.O.C. went through a handful of lead singers, but now catalyst Mike Dean returned. Although no longer singing, Dean is still playing bass, bringing C.O.C. back to the intensity they once displayed. Their new stuff can sound a little like Soundgarden at times, holding too tightly to metal melodrama; but 1986’s Animosity should make many a hardcore enthusiast’s top 10 list. Masquerade (Khalid/Hutchinson)
DANDY WARHOLS — See article. Planet Jam Cotton Club (York)
WILL DOWNING — Motown recording artist Downing has the kind of smooth baritone that can strip the varnish off old furniture. His most recent recording, All the Man You Need, features the same rhythm section that appeared on D’Angelo’s Voodoo, but Downing’s seductive vocal stylings are cut from a more traditional R&B approach. Dim the lights and turn the hi-fi down low, Will’s got you covered. Hyatt Regency (Hutchinson)
EMMA GIBBS BAND, DAVID BLACKMON — There’s no Emma in the band (they named it after a bandmember’s grandma), but these Carolina groove/pop/jam rockers always put on a lively show with plenty of grace, despite all those Y chromosomes. Joining them tonight is Athens-based fiddler David Blackmon, who guested on their recent CD. Also on the bill is Abbo’s Alley. Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)
EUPHORIA MACHINE — Formerly known as Motherload, the Columbia, S.C.-based quartet recently changed names and lineups just in time for the release of their debut full-length recording, In Your Head. Straightforward melodic hard rock with an occasional electronic edge, the band celebrates its CD release party this weekend. Dark Horse Tavern (Hutchinson)
EVAN & JARON — See article. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)
ELENI MANDELL — Mandell is a stunningly gifted new vocalist who combines the confrontational angst of Liz Phair and Exene Cervenka with the smoky sensuality of Kelly Hogan and the velvet smoothness of Sheryl Crow. The intoxicating batch of original torch songs on her new CD Thrill is even spiked with one helluva hot rod anthem, “1970 Red Chevelle.” Caledonia Lounge/Athens (Nicoll)
MEAN RED SPIDERS — Mean Red Spiders play exquisite, effects-laden shoegazer-style indie rock that will leave you feeling like you’re soaring skyward, as chilling guitars and vocals hang in the air like breath on a cold winter night. See review online at atlanta.creativeloafing.com. Isobella opens. Dottie’s (Ware)
RIGHTEOUS VIBES — This bi-monthly event returns to the West End (above the Soul Vegetarian Restaurant) with more music and poetry in an “uplifting, smoke-free atmosphere.” Tonight’s headliner is local acid-jazz/soul band Jiva. For more information, call 404-386-9316. Return to Royalty Ballroom/879 Ralph D. Abernathy Blvd. (Sarig)
STRING CHEESE INCIDENT — See listing for Nov. 17. Tabernacle (Horowitz)
STAR ROOM BOYS, SUZETTE & THE NEON ANGELS — Sweet country sounds straight out of Athens, the Star Room Boys capture a rich slice of the early ’60s honky-tonk style. They have matured and refined their act to near-perfection, and reach for the soul with every word. Honky-tonk rocker Suzette Lawrence is a fine songwriter and singer who surrounds herself with competent musicians. Equal parts country and rockabilly with a taste of Tejano thrown in, she is an energetic and exciting entertainer. Star Bar (Kelly)
VERSUS, THE COMAS, CRICKET — Though perceived in some corners as blandly conventional, few contemporary indie rock bands make better crunchy pop than Versus. Mixing nervy, agitated guitar (reminiscent of both Television and Mission of Burma) against meaty, offbeat melodies, Versus ably demonstrate that sometimes oil and water do mix. Their new release, Hurrah, hurls past like a runaway subway, creating a more convincing subterranean rumble than anything Sonic Youth has managed recently. The Comas play slow, syrupy indie pop — trippy, textured and twirling. Sometimes sedate, but no sedative, the Comas’ music is more like a sweet, mellow buzz. The chirpy Cricket and her big guitar also appears. Echo Lounge (Robertson/Smith)
VIGILANTES OF LOVE — The Intown Community Church in Toco Hills transforms periodically into the Intown Coffeehouse to host singer-songwriters that offer a positive voice in their music. Tonight, longtime local musician Bill Mallonee brings his band Vigilantes of Love to the church’s loft space. For reservations and more information, call 404-633-8077, ext. 752. Intown Community Church/2059 LaVista Road (Sarig)
CHARLES WALKER, JOHNNY JONES SOUL & BLUES REVUE — Former Chess & Decca recording artist and Motown songwriter Charles Walker is joined by Nashville blues guitarist Johnny Jones for a one night only engagement. Rib Shack Cafe/Tucker (Ware)
