SUN/JANUARY 7
BOOGIE NIGHTS WITH THE DISCO DEACON — The club that goes to great lengths cultivating its environment as an ideal listening space for acoustic music throws that all out the window starting tonight and continuing on Sundays in January. Local deejay the Disco Deacon turns Eddie’s into a disco palace as he spins old-school dance tunes. Rest assured, though, some things will remain the same: Eddie will neither be installing a lighted floor in the main room, nor will he be trading his pipe tobacco for a mound of coke. EDDIE “THE CHIEF” CLEARWATER — See review, p. 69. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)
SUNDAY SIPPIN’ PARLOR -- The afternoon alt-country hoedown gets underway at 4 p.m. and features two local acts. Incorporating both accordion and mandolin, the Slim Chance Experience achieves a folk middle ground where zydeco and bluegrass meet. The result is a style that captures the festiveness of these musical traditions while tempering them with a sadder, “tear in my beer” country droop. Mad Kate combines keening vocal melodrama and a traditional Celtic-beat feel to varied effect. Somber Reptile__ (Hutchinson)
SUNDAY SWING — The Masquerade’s longstanding swing-music theme night comes to an end with tonight’s finale. Shame; the swing revival has been dead for so long now, if they’d held out just a little while longer, it was bound to come around again. Rest in peace, ye hounds of retro-hell. Masquerade (Sarig)
