ATLANTA JAZZ FESTIVAL — A day of free concerts in the park, beginning at 2 p.m. See article, and a complete schedule. Piedmont Park (Sarig)
BLOODKIN, AGENTS OF GOOD ROOTS — Athens' Bloodkin often get lumped into the jam-band category because they play shows with bands like openers Agents of Good Roots, who lean on the predictable jam-funk a little too heavily. Bloodkin, however, can deliver a straight-ahead rock show with very little useless noodling. Smith's Olde Bar (Smith)
BUBBAPALOOZA: PART TWO — This unusually berserk Bubba night begins at 5 p.m. with the high-octane hayseed hilarity of Chickens and Pigs (See Earshot). Following them in rapid-fire succession come the mighty Stomper 4X4 (featuring former members of Shitkicker Deluxe), the sloshy Gravy Boat and the Cramps-like crazies of North Carolina's Jimmy and the Teasers. The offbeat bop continues with theremin-driven tunes from Billy Joe Winghead, after which everyone better tighten the chinstraps of their Stetsons for a hard-ridin' triple assault by Bully, the Redneck Underground Railroad and the demolition-dieselbillies of Truckadelic. Star Bar (Nicoll)
THE CLOSE, MODEL CITIZEN, GHOST TOUR — A bill with strong Alabama ties: Moodswing Records' The Close, from Auburn but now resident ATLiens, play clean post-punk bridging early Public Image Ltd. throb, math rock and emo. Tuscaloosa's Model Citizen play fist-pumping intense rock 'n' roll. Finally, Ghost Tour take dark days and make light of them, crafting melancholy but catchy songs about fucking, being fucked over and related topics. Eyedrum (Ware)
DECATUR ARTS FESTIVAL — Rocking country spitfire Cindy Lou Harrington plays a spirited headlining set beginning at 7 and kickin' until 10 p.m. Backed by her band Showdown, Harrington performs under the gazebo, virtually in the shadow of Eddie's Attic. Earlier in the day, bandstand performances include local singer/songwriter Morgan Rowe (noon), Middle Eastern dancers Troupe Mosaic (1 p.m.), alt-pop band Tammy Allen and the MetaPop Experience (2 p.m.), country-folk act the Zealots (3 p.m.) and the Atlanta Saengerkreis (4 p.m.), offering traditional German song and dance. Decatur Square (Smith/Sarig)
HONEYMAGNOLIA — Multi-instrumentalist singer/rapper Womackk headlines this new weekly upscale-and-urban music/art event. Algebra, like Womackk a local female singer/songwriter with an androgynous name, also performs. 7 Stages (Sarig)
MARK KNOPFLER — Although Knopfler's most recent album has been called the best of his career, it didn't exactly storm up the charts. But he's savvy enough to know he's gonna have to spice things up with stadium-sized Dire Straits hits, especially on his first U.S. tour in a decade (and with tickets priced at $50). Rest assured you won't spend your money for nothing. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Horowitz)
SAMMIE, CO-ED — The under-recognized Dallas Austin protégé joins these homegrown sensations to kick off Memorial Day weekend. The junior-high set will dig Sammie's bouncy tunes, including the hit "I Like It." The prom-going bunch will appreciate Co-ed's smooth R&B flavor dipped with hip-hop attitude. Six Flags (Noelzine)
LEADFOOT, ULTIMATICS, BITCH, LUST — Featuring former members of Corrosion of Conformity, Leadfoot is a throwback to straight-up, pre-glam rock 'n' roll. With gruff vocals, wailing guitar solos and bad 'tudes, the band brings back the spirit of '84 like its name was George Orwell, y'all. On a similar no-frills punk tip are Pittsburgh's Ultimatics, who churn through raw anthems with classic irritable aplomb. Also performing: local hard-rock cover band Bitch and female-fronted trash-rock trio Lust. 9 Lives Saloon (Hutchinson)
RADON FEST — Performance artist Kamilsky, former bassist for Czech adventurers Us Jsme Doma, heads the freeform, multimedia act Koonda Holaa and the Beetchees. Along with Atlanta's own darkly experimental sound troupe Pineal Ventana, the Beetchees headline the Radon Fest's line-up of twisted and skewed music. Body of Binky and Praying for Oblivion also perform. The Earl (Sarig)
REVERIE — Deepsound presents Jackal and Hyde, Omar Santana and DJ Three providing some of the ruffest screeching breaks imaginable. Once you get on, there's no stopping this ride. In the jungle room, DJs Abstract, Wednesday and more make sure you are properly rolled over. The Market (Ware)
TONOHONEY — Led by Ira Malkin on vocals and occasional harmonica, Tonohoney avoids the usual pitfalls and cliches on its way to an appealing mix of originals and covers that invoke rock, funk, jazz and blues. Northside Tavern (Powell)
