Sound Menu March 06 2002 Sun

BONEY JAMES, DONNIE — Jazzheads will grouse, yet James' Grover Washington-style fusion nails a high-gloss, smooth-groove urban pop for heavy breathing couples with a love jones. As such, it works perfectly well. But why anyone would want to hear this outside of the bedroom, especially for 40 bucks a clip, is unclear. Regardless, a sexy time is guaranteed for all. Local retro-soulman Donnie — himself on the verge of wider national exposure — opens the show. Fox Theatre (Horowitz)

DISMEMBERMENT PLAN — See article, p. 87. Cotton Club (Davidson)

JANAH — See listing for Fri., March 8. Borders Books and Music (Sarig)

THE MOONEY SUZUKI, THE CAPITOL YEARS — The Mooney Suzuki kicks out the jams, motherfuckers. Touring to preview their excellent upcoming April release, Electric Sweat, they rank up there with Streetwalkin' Cheetahs and the Hellacopters as revivalists of the finest in Stones/Stooges garage rawk. But Mooney Suzuki also adds that maximum R&B, forging the finest in Motor City mod. Fractured Beatles-happy sound collagists the Capitol Years open. The Hiss also performs. The Earl (Ware/Rowland)

NOFX, FRENZAL RHOMB, MAD CADDIES, INSPECTION 12 — Though SoCal's NOFX have been all about concept recently — 17-minute singles and a split with Rancid covering each other's songs — it's most important to remember the concepts they helped concrete: highly melodic humorous takes on hardcore. A punk revivalist band whose sound has been ripped as many times as the originators. Opening are equally hilarious Australian party punks Frenzal Rhomb, California skankers the Mad Caddies and the pop-punk of Florida's Inspection 12. Note: Tickets from the cancelled Oct. 26 show will be honored. Masquerade Music Park (Ware)

REMY ZERO, HOME TOWN HERO — As pretentious, nebulous and generic as their name, these Southerners reach for common ground between Bush, Live and U2 and come up sounding like watered down Days of the New. Alt-rock radio-ready, Remy manages a few dramatic melodies, yet like that Chinese dinner, the music tastes OK going down, but an hour later it's a vague memory. Opening is new California grunge-pop outfit Home Town Hero, whose debut record comes out on Madonna' Maverick label in May. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)
