Go-Go’s Redux

“With that lame version of ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ on the radio right now,” says singer/guitarist Sonia Tetlow of Hillary Duff’s anemic revival of the Go-Go’s 1981 single, “I’m quite pleased to be kickin’ it like it should be.”

Tetlow — along with pals Becky Shaw (vocals), Candi Jiosne (guitar), Linda Bolley (drums) and Julie Clark (bass) — has been occasionally covering the Go-Go’s catalog of hits since they formed Captain Deneuve in 1996. The group of Atlanta scene vets remained a fixture of the club and party scene for a couple of years after an early afternoon debut at Dottie’s (now Lenny’s) “Vulvapalooza,” a gathering of female bands and artists, many directly inspired by the sunny California pop of Belinda Carlisle and company.

Now renamed the Faux-Go’s, with musician/producer Dede Vogt handling Clark’s bass duties, the band has the beat once again and is celebrating its return with a sure-to-be-memorable evening at the Earl.

“I would never have even thought of being a drummer had I not seen the Go-Go’s on ‘Solid Gold’ in 1982,” says Bolley. “Girls weren’t ‘mainstream’ drummers back then. I’ve always loved the Go-Go’s because they’re simple, straight to the point and they don’t take themselves too seriously. That’s the way life is meant to be lived.”

The Faux-Go’s play the Earl Sat., July 31, 9:30 p.m. $6. Surprises are in store, including a special appearance by CL’s own Lee Valentine Smith on guitar and other weirdness. Should he wear his usual attire, or should he camp it up in drag as Margot Olaverra, the long-forgotten founding Go-Go? In this election, your vote will actually count. Write lee.smith@creativeloafing.com with your choice. Results will be reported.
