Cher
Extravaganza: Live at the Mirage
Love Cher and want to see some Chippendale-worthy dancers in liquid leather? This 1991 concert from Las Vegas resort the Mirage hits the spot.
??
The term MILF was coined for Cher in this era — especially when she wore an electrical tape leotard in the video for "If I Could Turn Back Time." Even though this DVD has a cool feature that allows for toggling between the live show and rehearsal footage (where Cher is de-wigged), it's those outrageous Bob Mackie barely-there costumes that are the highlight here. If she had any more than a zero percent body fat ratio at that time, it must have all gone to her toes.
??
Those in desperate need of a little camp in their lives will appreciate this concert (originally a CBS special), particularly when her dead-on drag queen impersonator jumps on stage with her during a rousing rendition of "Perfection." But if they really wanted to go over the top, they would have hit that nail on the head had they included the true comedic moment of the tour (as discussed in her home movies): The time her wig fell off while on stage. Instead, the included blooper barely registers as a gaffe — it's not even silly.
??
Still, the home movies are fun. We get to see her have, as she puts it, a "geriatric Hello Kitty moment" in her whimsically decorated dressing room, and hear her tour mates pick different kinds of foods to describe her. One dancer selects Jell-O with curry, because she is "bouncy and unpredictable."
??
It seems unlikely that her "farewell tour" that concluded in 2005 was really her goodbye; she seems so at home on stage. But if it was, this older performance may well be a more fun way to remember her.
