Fleet Foxes

Seattle quintet Fleet Foxes has constructed a glowing and ornate pop album that draws from a palette of pastoral country and folk-rock fugues. “Baroque harmonic pop” is the viral catchphrase that the blogosphere has adopted when describing the album’s nocturnal pace. Songs like “Sun It Rises,” with its church-choir intro, and the Beach Boys-esque “White Winter Hymnal” diligently follow suit. “Quiet Houses” and “Heard Them Stirring” uphold the tone for a jangle-folk quietude that is graceful and filled with a sense of spectral wonder that transcends the rural tones of typical folk fodder. This is music that looks more toward the heavens than the earth to find dark, rich soil to plant roots for such a magical and mysterious sound. 3 stars
