Jimi Hendrix
Live at Monterey DVD
It was rock's equivalent of the shot heard 'round the world. A virtually unknown guitarist named Jimi Hendrix hit the stage for less than an hour at the closing set of 1967's Monterey Pop Festival, and the music world was changed forever. Although the performance has been previously available, a spiffed-up DVD with remastered video, two fascinating documentaries and stunning surround sound is a substantial improvement over any existing version. Extras include two black-and-white videos of the Experience recorded in the U.K. – apparently the earliest known live footage of Hendrix – and multiple camera angles for a few songs of the Monterey show. Even those who already know every note and stage move by heart will be thrilled by this upgraded version that is surely the final word on arguably the most exciting and influential gig in rock history. 5 stars.
