Langhorne Slim & the Law: The Spirit Moves

Dualtone Music

A lot has happened to Langhorne Slim since 2012’s The Way We Move. He moved to Nashville. He got sober. But his band, the Law, was a constant, and the confidence they fostered reveals itself in the album’s sonic strengths and lyrical vulnerabilities. Booming bass drum and ear-catching guitar riffs make The Spirit Moves as danceable as it is deep, with the occasional brass instrumentals and varied sounds on each track making Slim’s deeply personal lyrics accessible. Slim nails it on “Airplane,” cooing, “When I said you were strange/it was a compliment, you know.” The Spirit Moves is a screaming, stomping homage to the importance of individuality and the freedom of following your feelings. ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
