Bar Review - Elliott Street Deli & Pub

Laid back drinking in Castleberry Hill

AS REAL AS IT GETS: Ask any regular and he’ll tell you the brothers Jakob are the friendliest, most laid-back bar owners in town. The tiny bar — which used to be a crack house before its transformation into a bar/residence — is an intimate neighborhood pub where you don’t have to pretend you’re cooler than you actually are. An autographed “Good Times” photo, hundreds of signed greenbacks and a bitchin’ velvet painting of everyone’s favorite outlaw, Willie Nelson, adorn the walls.

BOOZE AND BITES: The pub serves a good mix of cheap and midpriced beers, liquors and well-mixed drinks including mojitos made with fresh mint. But the coolest part is the self-serve beer keg where you write down your name, drink to your liver’s content and pay up at the end of the night. The menu is sandwich-heavy — the “Caprizi,” a tomato, mozzarella and basil sandwich, is especially tempting.

HAPPENING HAPPENINGS: Bikers, local artists, Falcons’ fans and assorted urbanites flock to the bar’s events, including serious football viewing, performance art during the popular Castleberry Hill Art Stroll, burlesque shows and live jazz.
