Collective effort

In today's competitive art world, commissions, reviews and steep art prices can overshadow collaborative efforts. Putting rivalries aside, six neighboring galleries are teaming up for a visual arts event July 20 that will emphasize the nostalgic theme of summertime in Cuba. The gathering, titled White Linen, combines the forces of Anthony Ardavin Gallery, Bender Fine Art, Galerie Timothy Tew, The Sportsman's Gallery Ltd., Trinity Gallery and Vespermann Glass Gallery. Each Buckhead gallery will feature individual displays of works by new and established artists, including Anna Carll, Leslie Bell and newbie William Mize.

Stacey Gilles, administrator of Trinity Gallery, says that Timothy Tew approached the other gallery owners with the collective event idea to expose the community to a diverse selection of unique art. The second annual summer festival is intended to attract new patrons to the art community and give disparate galleries an opportunity to work together. But the ultimate goal of the event is to create an open block party, not just a show opening.

Following the "white linen" theme, the community is encouraged to wear linen pants, sandals and straw hats while roaming the galleries and enjoying complimentary Mojitos, the classic Cuban drink. Spicy appetizers from Cafe Tu Tu Tango also will be offered in some of the galleries.

Anthony Ardavin Gallery, Bender Fine Art, Galerie Timothy Tew, The Sportman's Gallery Ltd., Trinity Gallery and Vespermann Glass Gallery will team up for White Linen July 20 from 6:30-9 p.m. 309 E. Paces Ferry Road. 404-266-0102.??

What to some is an authentic Irish haven is also an unusual microcosm in the Buckhead bar scene: an unpretentious, dimly lit bar filled not with pickup artists but actual drinkers. McDuff's, which boasts being "the only 100 percent Irish-owned pub in Atlanta," is also the official headquarters of the St. Patrick's Day Parade, which takes place in Buckhead Saturday at 1 p.m.
