See & Do - Festival: Sweet Auburn Festival May 09 2007
Sun., May 13
A bustling black commercial district in the pre-Civil Rights South, and MLK Jr.’s birthplace, workplace and resting place, Auburn Avenue has seen better days. In 1984, the Rev. Hosea Williams started the SWEET AUBURN FESTIVAL hoping to help revitalize the corridor. The revitalization hasn’t arrived, but the festival is going strong. Revelers can enjoy food, music, and the festival’s county fair-like vibe along a jam-packed Auburn Avenue through Sun., MAY 13. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, duck into the Auburn Avenue Research Library for the Sweet Auburn International Film Festival, happening at the same time. Free. Fri., 5-11 p.m.; Sat., 11 a.m.9 p.m.; Sun., 28 p.m. Auburn Avenue between Courtland and Jackson streets. 404-886-4469. sweetauburn.com/springfest2007/.
