Weekend Arts Agenda: 'Degenerates' and 'Cold Comfort' August 06 2015

Last Saturday, Hodgepodge Coffeehouse and Gallery hosted the opening reception for the fourth annual Degenerates IV group exhibition. The show features almost 50 local artists from the art collective of the same name and it's up for the month of August. And while the opening reception hosted vendors galore, all of the pieces are still up for your viewing (and purchasing) pleasure.
?
? FRIDAY
? >> Marcia Wood Gallery is hosting a group show, august geometry. Inspired by geometric abstraction, the show features works from Frances Barth, Jeff Conefry, Clark Derbes, Scott Eakin, Kevin Finklea, Tim Flowers, Richard Harris, Duncan Johnson, Mary Judge, Joanne Mattera, and Justin Rabideau. With an opening reception on Fri., Aug. 7, the group exhibition will be on display for the next month until Sep. 5.
?
? >> Soft Eyes, a group show curated by artist Pete Schulte, opens at Whitespace Gallery. Featuring works from Douglas Degges, John Dilg, Hamlett Dobbins, Katy Fischer, Julia Fish, Travis Head, and many more, the show's concept revolves around "a point of focus, context and the interstitial spaces that sew them together." The opening reception is on Fri., Aug. 7 from 7-10 p.m. followed by an artist's talk on Sat., Aug. 8 at 2 p.m.
?
? >> Graffiti artist Jeremy Brown marks the spot with LOVE at http://clatl.com/atlanta/Location?oid=1305613&guide=cityKai Lin Art Gallery as he opens his solo exhibition on Fri., Aug. 7, from 7-10 p.m. Brown's colorful work "explores passion, energy, and drive through the act of creation." In an adjoining gallery, Lucha Rodriguez will be exhibiting her mixed media art works and intricate paper cut installations. The pieces explore the concept of "internal" as it relates to the human body and mind.
?
? SATURDAY
?
? Marcy Starz opens her first solo exhibition, Cold Comfort, at Beep Beep Gallery this Sat., Aug. 8, from 7-10 p.m. Starz merges human and animal figures in her oil paintings to express conflict and other struggles in relationships. She utilizes thrift store bed sheets finds as backgrounds for her pieces, making the juxtaposition of delicate florals and aggressive emotions a shocking one. Other figures in her work show a latent vacancy in their body language and stares, whether to they are fading into the background or dealing with passive aggressive feelings. Starz has shown her work at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) and was a participating artist at Living Walls in 2012 and 2013.
?
? >> On Sat., Aug. 8, head to Eyedrum, which is hosting a closing reception for https://www.facebook.com/events/860760237340162/Ladylike, with readings by Jayne O'Connor, Jared Dawson, and Nicholas Goodley. The exhibition showcases "queer and feminist perspectives of 'girlhood.'" It features photography by Jon DeanSunni JohnsonSara KeithAustin Frantz, and Blake England. DJ Liliana Bakhtiari will be spinning some great tunes in between the readings from 7-10 p.m.
?
?LAST CHANCE
? Fri., Aug 7,  marks your last chance to see Nina Dolgin's Very Sensitive solo exhibition at the Broad Street Visitors Center. Dolgin has constructed a time capsule of her childhood using videos, personal relics, and modified family photos as a way to express those feelings she couldn't as a child. Jumpers, choker necklaces, old notebooks — childhood dreams are alive and present in this small yet endearing show. The exhibition originally opened during the Atlanta Zine Fest in mid-July and it will be open tomorrow from 7-11 p.m. We hear a '90s karaoke party will kick off at 8 p.m. to send you off on the nostalgia train. So, get your pipes ready to sing some tunes.
?
?>> Walk across the street for OCULARIS, a show curated by local artist Katie Troisi, as they are hosting a closing reception at Mammal Gallery from 7-11 p.m. The Deer Bear Wolf exhibition features work by Alea Hurst, Ally White, Danielle Brutto, Maxwell Sebastian, Mike Germon, Paige Adair, Romy Aura Maloon, Spencer Sloan, and more.
