Well, it's official: Mayor Kasim Reed has officially become a father.
Sarah-Elizabeth Reed, the mayor's wife, gave birth yesterday to the couple's newborn daughter, Maria Kristan Reed. In addition to the announcement of her birth, it's the first time we've publicly heard of the mayor's marriage.
"Sarah-Elizabeth Reed and I are blessed to announce the birth of our first child, Maria Kristan Reed," Reed said in a statement on Thursday. "I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received from our family and friends. This is truly the happiest moment of my life. As we celebrate our daughter's birth, we ask that you continue to respect the privacy of our growing family."
Back in late March, Reed proposed to affordable housing developer and longtime girlfriend Sarah Elizabeth-Langford, daughter of Atlanta attorney Susan Langford and late State Sen. Arthur Langford, during a vacation to the Bahamas. He also announced at the time that they were expecting a child.
The birth of Reed's first child comes days after he told reporters, who had asked him if he would call for greater oversight over the way Atlanta City Council spends discretionary funds, that he was "not a parent" and wouldn't tell them how to conduct their business. We see what you did there, mayor!
